About LWV North Central Michigan
The League of Women Voters was founded by Carrie Chapman Catt in 1920, just six months before the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified, giving women the right to vote.
It is one of the nation's most respected community-based organizations. In addition to our work in elections, League volunteers work on issues of local importance from education to land use and housing.
We are an organization fully committed to diversity, equity and inclusion in principle and in practice.
The League is proud to be nonpartisan, neither supporting nor opposing candidates or political parties at any level of government, but always working on vital issues of concern to members and the public.
Just past our 106th anniversary--February 14, 2026--we recognize this is not a moment for celebration, but a time to ground ourselves in what this work has always demanded: empowering voters and defending democracy.

The Crawford County Geographical Unit was established in early 2018 as part of the Grand Traverse Area League (LWVGTA).
The fledgling Unit carried out basic voter service activities, including developing a county TRY (They Represent You) brochure, establishing a Vote411.org site for Crawford County and participating in the statewide Board of Canvassers Oberver Program after each election.
In addition, the Unit held voter registration events, candidate forums and candidate Meet and Greets. Educational events were held in the community for voters to learn the new election processes in 2018 and 2022.
The Crawford County Geographical Unit moved to the next level as LWV North Central Michigan (LWVNCM) in March 2026. LWVNCM now encompasses three counties--Crawford, Otsego and Roscommon.
Our efforts will continue to have real impact as a voice of nonpartisanship in North Central Michigan as we carry out the League mission: EMPOWER VOTERS AND DEFEND DEMOCRACY.
